Types of Load Cells

A load cell is an electronic device (a transducer) that is used to convert a force into an electrical signal. What does this mean? A load cell is a transducer which converts force into a measurable electrical output. It's a mechanical electrical component used in various industries. Applications  vart from personal health care to large scale / heavy scale manufacturing industries. It is also used in automation and security systems.

There is a large array of load cells that are available today, all have different specifications and are more suited to certain jobs than others. Simply put, a load cell is a weighing machine which uses electrical input to perform their tasks. They come in different varieties and sizes depending on the use of the machine. Buyers need to know the specific type and function of a load cell before purchasing one of these handy devices. In purchasing the load cells, the main features to look out for are their range of weights, overloads, and accuracy. Some common types of load cells carried by scale companies like All Scale Shop include:

Canister Type

Canister Load Cell
Canister type load cells have been around for a long time and tend to be the industry standard for most high capacity, compression applications. Canister type load cells are used for single and multi-weighing applications. This type of cell has a button on the top and bottom side and can be used in compression only. Canister type load cells are used in tank scales, vessel weighing applications, axle weighing scales, truck weighing, vehicle scales and weighbridges. Canister type load cells offer accurate measurement even in harsh environments.

Weighing Modules (beam)

Beam Load Cell
A weighing module or "beam" load cell generally consists of a load cell with a mounting kit.Beam load cells generally come in single or double-ended shear beam and canister type are the industry standard. Load cell weighing modules are used in tank scales, silo weighing, vessel weighing applications, axle weighing scales, truck weighing, vehicle scales and weighbridges.

Compression Load Cells:

They are made from stainless steel which enables them to withstand harsh environments. They are ideal when you use them in truck and railway scales. Experts also recommend them for tank and silo weighing. There are other people in the gas and oil industry who use them. The cool thing is that the cells have proved very effective in these industries.

Tension: they are designed to be used in lifting, weighing and general measurements. Most of tension load cells make use of sealing compounds that are very durable. To ensure that the compounds used are exceedingly durable, the cells come with a laser welded sealing.

Hydraulic (tanks):

Tank Load Cell
This is a type of mechanical load cell. It has a weight range of up to an incredible 10,000,000 lb, and its accuracy to one 25/th of a percent. These types of load cells can handle enormous impacts well and they are virtually insensitive to temperature.  Because they can handle impact they are usually used for tanks, bins and hoppers, and hazardous areas.

This is another type of a mechanical load cell. It has a wide weight range and a high accuracy. On the plus side they are intrinsically safe and it contains no fluids but on the downside they have a slow response rate and they need to be cleaned regular with dry air. These types of load cells are usually used in the food industry and hazardous areas.

Scale Service Center

Scales, by their very nature, see a lot of use. In many industries, like shipping and logistics, supermarkets, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and travel, scales see hundreds, even thousands of uses per day. Scales, like any other complex mechanism, can break down over time: its parts can break, its wiring could fail, its assemblies can rust. Because scales can be expensive, and because they are so essential to your business, it’s important to have a reliable scale service center that can fix mechanical and electronic problems and that can replace necessary parts quickly, efficiently and affordably.

Scale service is essentially three different services: repair, recalibration and scale part replacement, but actually getting your scale back into working order is often some combination of all three. Quality repair involves fixing any mechanical or electric problems that are stopping your scale from working. Recalibration is necessary when your scale is otherwise functional, but is giving incorrect measurements for indeterminate reasons and needs to be reconfigured to be accurate and precise once again. Part replacement requires having a warehouse filled with the necessary components to get a scale back in working order, or having strong relationships with scale manufacturers in order to get the parts quickly and affordably and to knowledgeably install them into your scales so that they work properly.

A reliable scale service center will be able to repair, recalibrate and replace parts for the scales on a short time-table and at a rate your company can absorb. All Scale Shop is such a scale service center. Because All Scale Shop sells scales from major brands it has the spare parts and the strong relationships necessary to get parts replaced in a timely fashion. Postal Scales

Postal scales are used to increase mailing efficiency by reducing the chances of overpaying on outgoing mail. It saves your business a lot by a great extent. Postal scales can be digital or manual. You can go for either based on your needs. If your company has to ship heavy packages regularly, it is recommended that you get a digital scale. It will save you both time and money. However if you just intend to buy one to avoid going to the post office, a manual scale will be enough for you. Today at All Scale Shop, we'd like to discuss our postal scales.

Manual Postage Scales
Manual postage scales, also sometimes referred to as analog postage scales, use a balance or a spring to weigh envelopes. Manual postage scales simply give the weight of your item. To determine the postage rate, it's necessary to reference a table of current postage prices. Manual postage scales can be accurate, but require users to read the weight from a mechanical needle, which increases the likelihood of human error. Over time, the inner workings or overall structure of manual postage scales can become damaged and render the scale inaccurate. There are small handheld varieties of manual postage scales available which are especially prone to breaking or bending. The larger models that look similar to a triple-beam balance are much sturdier. Manual postage scales typically cost substantially less than electronic postage scales.

Digital Postage Scales
Postal Scale
Digital postage scales or electronic postage scales, use a pressure-sensing microprocessor to provide a clear, unambiguous digital readout. Many digital postage scales are programmed with rate information, so they can display the exact price of postage, but they must be adjusted each time the postal rates change. Digital postage scales typically cost more than manual postage scales. Electronic models that can compare prices for multiple carriers, handle heavier weights, and can download rate updates typically cost more than simpler models with fewer

Both these scales have their advantages and disadvantages

Digital scales are more complex, expensive and have more features as compared to a manual scale. Digital scales are mostly recommended for professional use where you have a hand at the instrument. Otherwise, you can go for a manual scale, it is easy to understand and inexpensive.

The best of both digital and manual
Postage Meters With Built-in Digital Postage Scales - If you cannot choose between digital and manual, there are all-in-one units available that bundle a scale and a meter together for greater functionality. These postage scales can quickly weigh a package or envelope, assign a postage grade and rate, and print out the results. Depending on the model, it can be possible to print the postage directly onto the mailing envelope, or onto a piece of adhesive paper for a quick stick to any package. These units are handy for buyers that don't already have a postage meter but are looking to print their own postage. For a larger business that requires a top-of-the-line mail system, manufacturers offer a wide variety of mail management systems that house complex internal computers. For situations that only require the ability to weigh packages, it would not be advisable to spend the extra dollars on the bundle if its full capacity would not be put to use.

Weighing Scales

Weighing scales are an important part of industrial processes and business transactions that deal with precise weights and measures. These scales are available in many different sizes and designs depending on the required function. Many industries including shipping, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and transportation make daily use of weighing scales. With their large range of measurements, virtually anything can be weighed precisely.

Weighing scales come in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and capacities. Some well-known weighing scales include  floor scales, bench scalespocket scales,  jewelry scales, and lab scales. The floor scales are one of the most recognized weighing scales. Many are made for weight-conscious individuals for use at home. Veterinarians use animal scales to determine the weight ofpets. A shipping scale is a very exact weighing scale that is standardized to recording load according to government-certified measurement standards. Standard levels might not be regulated in such a manner. Airlines, transportation and shipping companies often employ shipping scales which use superior digital technology.

Another type of weighing scale is the digital scale and just as the name implies, this scale evaluates an object's weight and traces it in digital format. Digital weighing scales can trace weights to a fraction of a percentage of a measuring unit, which many analog scales are incapable of doing. Another familiar type of scale is the bench scale which is used for both commercial and residential purposes. You can see these instruments in post offices where they used to weigh your postage. They come comes in different series and weight capacities and are often made of aluminum or steel.

There are various weighing scales for numerous purposes . The question is where do you get effective and worth-while scales?

Bench Scales

Bench Scales are among the most precise and accurate scales available for both powders and liquids. For that reason, they come in several different styles and measure to several different orders of magnitude of accuracy. There are numerous industries that benefit from bench scales, including the food preparation and laboratory sciences.

Bench Scales for Professional Kitchens

Recipes are both an art and a science. But if the science fails, the art is does too. Many recipes depend upon microscopically small ingredients that must be measured to the gram or milligram or ad smaller. For example, too much of a special spice burns the tongue. Too little results in blandness. The tiniest and most precise of measurements can mean the difference between a meal that’s unforgettable and one that’s better forgotten.

Bench Scales for Laboratory Science

Whenever you are creating a new formula being able to measure it down to the smallest possible measure matters. When a formula is tested, you want to be able to test it at a smaller scale initially so that you don’t waste rare ingredients. If the formula is successful, you need to be able to repeat it, so a precise measurement is an absolute must. Without these accurate and precise measures, your work can’t be trusted. With a quality bench scale, you can get the results you need again and again.

Whether in the kitchen, the lab, the post office or elsewhere, the difference greatness and disaster isn’t on a knife’s edge, but on a bench scale’s balance.

Retail Computing Scales

Today we at All Scale Shop want to go into detail about our retail computing scales. Chances are you've seen them around in stores, especially grocery stores, bust have you ever wondered what makes them special?

Price computing scales designate all those scales that are normally available with an LCD display, but have an additional capability of converting units to price. As is evident for this description, price computing scales are useful for weighing by traders of: fruits, vegetables, and other grocery items; meat and butcher shops; bakery items like cake and biscuits, ice cream sellers, hardware etc. A trader just needs to feed in the price per unit rate as many times as the market changes. Each time he will get readings for different items with their price. For the convenience of the customers Dual display LCD screens are also available with one in front for the counter attendant and the other at the back for the customer to see. Since most price computing scales are used in trade they are considered legal, if they have been approved by NTEP or any other regulatory body in your area.

Retail Computing Scales
The types of price computing scales vary according to features; you may be looking for 15 lb, 30 lb, or 60 lb. Capacity which can be calculated by one scale for fruits and vegetable weighing. Small sizes that save space and have a battery powered operation facilitating portability are also in demand as fruit sellers on carts or vendors need to move it from time to time. Deli shops, meat shops, candy counters or cheese shops with limited counter space may find compact design very useful.

Price computing scales is most desirable for the cost conscious retailer who wants to be honest in his dealings, hence precision in weight reading and accuracy in price conversion is a matter of integrity for them. Electronic load cells with a digital display make sure that these shop owners are satisfied. Out of all scales available in the market the better ones are easy to install and operate with easy cleaning and minimum maintenance requirements. The more attractive ones have a rugged housing, sleek profile and small footprint with some additional features like:

1. Raised keys with a key beeper
2. Battery operated with auto sleep and shut off options for power saving
3. High resolution to weigh small objects and give increments like 0.01 lb or 0.005 lb divisions
4. High grade polymer surface with stainless steel pan
5. Price computing function by count (number) of objects
6. Large memory storage up to 25 PLU's
7. Price accumulation at the end of grocery purchase by one customer.
8. Tare function to enable reset of display to zero after adding object each time to a loaded pan.
9. LCD displays with large numbers and back lit displays

Price computing scales like all others need to be bought with platform size and capacity in mind according to the type, size and weight of object you plan to put in it. Minimum and maximum weight requirements must be kept in mind to allow for your full range of products to be weighed by one scale. Finally accuracy in reading and durability of scales for use in harsh environments are factors that should drive the purchase decision.

Shop scales can be used in a variety of different environments, measuring out items in greengrocers, delis, sweet shops and butchers. It is an essential legal requirement that these scales are accurate and fair to both parties. Customers whose items are being weighed must be able to trust that retail scales will ensure their requests are fulfilled precisely. Retailers must also feel confident that their price computing scales are helping them to charge the right amount.

Retail Computing Scales
Accurate retail scales are invaluable when loose goods are being sold or when prices are being determined by weight. Customers can ask for a specific weight or amount, so that they can buy exactly as much as they need of a particular item, no more, no less. The scales can weigh out the desired amount so that customers' demands are being met just as accurately as when pre-packaged goods are being sold, but without the need to sell fixed weights or volumes of the product. Customers can also buy goods that are priced by weight, with accurate price computing scales ensuring that they know exactly what they are getting and that they are being charged the right amount. Price computing scales can also be helpful for retailers who need to quickly and accurately compute prices by weight. The right equipment can make this task much easier.

However, shop scales do much more than simply enabling goods to be weighed. Accurate retail scales can boost consumer confidence, building an invaluable sense of trust between the retailers and their customers. Being able to watch their chosen items being weighed in front of them can give customers confidence that they are being treated fairly. Many shop scales even come with a tower display on which the customer can watch the goods being weighed. Consumers trust the retailer more because they can see that they are being treated fairly. They can be sure that they are getting exactly what they are paying for, particularly if they can watch the amount being calculated by visible price computing scales.

The retailers themselves also benefit when they can have confidence in the accuracy of retail scales. Retailers who know that they are always selling exactly the right amount can protect their profits by avoiding any unnecessary losses. Inaccurate scales can cause losses for the retailer when weights are underestimated just as easily as they can result in customers being overcharged due to overestimates. Inaccurate weighing can also reduce customer confidence and loyalty, harming the reputation of the retailer. Accurate shop scales ensure that transactions are fair for both parties.
