A load cell is an electronic device (a transducer) that is used to convert a force into an electrical signal. What does this mean? Canister Type


Canister Load Cell

Beam Load Cell
A weighing module or "beam" load cell generally consists of a load cell with a mounting kit.Beam load cells generally come in single or double-ended shear beam and canister type are the industry standard. Load cell weighing modules are used in tank scales, silo weighing, vessel weighing applications, axle weighing scales, truck weighing, vehicle scales and weighbridges.

Compression Load Cells:

They are made from stainless steel which enables them to withstand harsh environments. They are ideal when you use them in truck and railway scales. Experts also recommend them for tank and silo weighing. There are other people in the gas and oil industry who use them. The cool thing is that the cells have proved very effective in these industries.

Tension: they are designed to be used in lifting, weighing and general measurements. Most of tension load cells make use of sealing compounds that are very durable. To ensure that the compounds used are exceedingly durable, the cells come with a laser welded sealing.

Hydraulic (tanks):

Tank Load Cell
This is a type of mechanical load cell. It has a weight range of up to an incredible 10,000,000 lb, and its accuracy to one 25/th of a percent. Pneumatic:

Analytical Balances

Today we at All Scale Shop want to go into detail about what our analytical balances are and what they are capable of.

Analytical Balances 
Analytical balances are also called laboratory balances. These are balances that are usually designed to measure masses within the sub-milligram range. The modern analytical balance is usually made of a measuring pan that is housed in a transparent enclosure. The enclosure has doors that lock in the mass that that is to be measured so that no dust or air currents get into the measuring balance and affect the operation of the balance.

Over time, there has been the development of a vented safety enclosure that allows for the flow of air without causing fluctuations and brings down the measure of mass up to 1μg without causing the loss of the mass being measured. This technology is usually used in mechanical analytical balances.

The balance with the vented safety enclosure must be housed in at a room temperature to ensure that you get the true weight of the substance being measured. This prevents the natural currents that occur between the inside of the analytical balance and the room. Such currents can cause errors in reading.

Another characteristic of the mechanical analytical balance is that it maintains its useful capacity by maintaining a constant loan in its balance beam. This enables adjustment of the fulcrum against a scale until the weight of the mass equals the weight of the beam on the other side. 

The electronic scales work by estimating the force that is required to bring the balance machine to equilibrium after the mass is put on the measuring pan. The electronic analytical scales do not use an actual mass. Some calibrations adjustments are made to compensate for gravity and avoid getting an erroneous reading due to the gravitational differences, 

The other common interference that the analytical balances engineered to countermeasure include the static electricity and tilting. Tilting causes the gravity to act on one part of the mass being measured thereby causing the measure to be lighter than its actual weight. The analytical scales have a solid base that helps them remain balanced on a surface. Static electricity works similarly to trapped air in the measuring compartment which leads to inaccurate results. Static electricity is dealt with by shielding the inner walls from attracting the sample being measured.

Analytical balances are commonly used in chemical, physics, and health research laboratories. Pharmaceutical companies also use analytical balances to measure ingredients used in the manufacturing of drugs. In all these uses, an error that may be negligible in the common life may cause an undesirable change in characteristics of the product under view.

What are Viscometers?

We at All Scale Shop have more than just scales and balances. We have scale accessories, manuals, cable parts and today’s subject, viscometers.

What are viscometers? They are an instrument used to measure the viscosity of a liquid. Viscosity refers to the how liquid responds to stress or stimuli. For example, water tends to move and splash a lot when a force acts upon it, while honey does not. In this example, water has a low viscosity while honey has a higher one. 

Viscometers are generally used in a laboratory or manufacturing settings to measure the viscosity of various liquids. Such liquids can include paint, oils, pharmaceutical substances, chemical substances, and so on.

There are several type of viscometers as well, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
·   U-tube: With U-Tube viscometers it is possible to measure the viscosity by noting how a liquid behaves as it goes down a U shaped tube with various chambers. It may include more than one type of tube for various liquids. While it this is an accurate way to measure viscosity, the tubes can be hard to clean because of their unusual shape.

·  Rotational: In this viscometer there are two parts, one that rotates and one that remains still. Inside the chamber for liquids there will be a cylinder that rotates creating a flow within the liquid. Rotational viscometers tend to be large and more expensive than others.
·  Turning Fork: Turning fork viscometers are modern and feature a digital display. With this one all you have to do is load the liquid, turn it on and wait. A small, vibrating plate acts as a sensor and can detect even the smallest changes for a highly accurate reading. It does require careful handling and will cost a little more than others.
·    Falling ball: This type measures viscosity by measuring the velocity of a metal ball as it falls through the liquid. The velocity can then be used to calculate the viscosity of a given liquid. One disadvantage is that it can only measure Newtonian liquids (non-foaming, liquid substances that don’t deform under stress forces).

The Difference Between Weighing Balances and Weighing Scales

Although there are a lot of differences between these weighing balances and scales, these terms are used interchangeably these days. However, one must not fall into this practice as the quantities measured by the two are entirely different. Today, we at All Scale Shop would like to demystify and help you understand the difference between weighing balances and scales. While Weighing Balances are used to measure mass, the latter are used to measure force. For beginners, Mass is defined as the measure of the quantity of matter; weight, on the other hand, can be defined as the force of gravity that acts on an object. Since the value of gravitational force varies, Weight is a variable, in contrast to Mass which is a constant.

The Difference Between Weighing Balances and Weighing Scales 
If you go back some years into the past, you would easily recall the use of balances as no matter which country, which grocery store you had been to, you were bound to see these weighing balances being used for measuring the quantity of food items/vegetables you’d bought. These Pan Balances comprise of two pans on either side, which are used to compare the torque on the arm due to the food items, to the torque on the arm due to a standard reference weight, using a horizontal lever. So basically, when you are paying for your groceries, you are paying for the gravitational mass of the things in your cart and not for their actual weight, as the effect of the gravitational pull is nullified because the same pull of earth is acting on both the pans.

Meanwhile, Weighing Scales make use of a spring that compresses or relaxes on loading and unloading of a weight respectively. This compression helps to measure the force between the object and the planet (Earth). For instance, you must have stood on the weighing machine at your doctor’s clinic. This machine uses a spring, which undergoes compression and points out your weight. However, these mechanical scales cannot be used for measuring heavy objects and thus have been replaced by Electronic scales, which depict the weight digitally.

Even though modern balances are more precise and can be used to perform calculations like limit functions for check weighing, percentage, mass unit conversion, specific-gravity weighing, etc. they are slowly and steadily losing their place to scales.

A common conception is that only a scale can be used to measure weight, and not a balance. However, this notion is completely wrong and will only create confusion in minds of other people. Both the scale and a balance can be used to measure weight, but owing to the limited capacity and size of the balances, scales tend to outlast them. This limited capacity is there to preserve the high display graduations and is not a technology constraint or flaw.

Nonetheless the analytical balances still find a place in various science laboratories because of the quality of generating higher precision as stated above. Analytical Balances

Analytical balance, as suggested by the name is an instrument used for analysis of mass. It determines the mass of the matter accurately and precisely. It is designed to measure small masses in milligram range, usually for experiment purposes. It is very sensitive so it can measure even the smallest of changes. It is basically used in chemical experiments, especially quantitative analysis. As we all know in quantitative analysis, accuracy is the key. In almost all analytical experiments, weighing the sample is always important for the reagents to be used in the preparation of the solution. The smallest of the masses have to be measured correctly otherwise large variations may be produced in the result. Now, as an analytical balance is so accurate, precise and sensitive, it is also pretty expensive. The most common type of analytical balance has a capacity of 100g and a sensitivity of 0.1mg. At All Scale Shop we have plenty of analytical balances and today we’d like to discuss how they work and what sets them apart from other balances.

Here’s how the parts of an analytical balance work:
Analytical Balances 
It consists of: An enclosed glass fitted case, a base plate, Beam Balance, and Stirrups. The working part, that is, the beam balance is actually enclosed in a glass case with doors. It is kept in such a way so that dust does not collect and so any air currents in the room do not affect the balance's operation. This enclosure is often called a draft shield.  The base plate is generally of black slate or black glass. The knife edges of the beam balance support the stirrups from which the pans are suspended. There is another knife edge in the middle (facing downwards) to support the beam balance on the bottom. When the balance is not in use and the pans are loading or unloading, the balance should be arrested.

Principle of working:
The working principle comes from the old arm balance. We used to balance both sides of the pan by
adding or taking out weights. The torque exerted by an unknown mass on one side of a pivot opposes the torque on the other side. The position of the pointer is noted. When it returns to the center, the torques are equal and weight can be calculated. Electronic analytical scales measure the force needed to counter the mass being measured rather than using actual masses. As such they must have calibration adjustments made to compensate for gravitational differences. They use an electromagnet to generate a force to counter the sample being measured and outputs the result by measuring the force needed to achieve balance. Such measurement device is called electromagnetic force restoration sensor.  Modern electronic laboratory balances work on the principle of magnetic force restoration. The force exerted by the object being weighed is lifted by an electromagnet. A detector measures the current required to oppose the downward motion of the weight in the magnetic field.

There are a few factors that affect an analytical balance:
Temperature: Slight change in temperature causes large variation in results. A constant temperature should be maintained while using an analytical balance. Also, the temperature should not be too hot or too cold as it may result in expansion or contraction.

Vibrations and air currents also tend to disturb the balance. It should be kept in a disturbance free environment to get error free results.

Always calibrate the equipment, it ensures an accurate reading. Some balances have internal calibration feature while labs conduct their own calibrations in some. It is recommended that you test your balance every few months and calibrate if needed.

Laboratory Balances

Most of our laboratory balances have an RS-232 interface for easy transfer of data to a PC.

Some of our laboratory balances do not need to be powered and doesn’t need batteries due to their construction. These kinds of laboratory balances are well suited for demonstration purposes in many schools and universities. Other laboratory balances like PCE-MA 200 determines the moisture content of materials weighed on it, the heating chambers are heated and used to dry the materials to be weighed then it calculates the moisture contact from the actual weight and gives you the difference.

Another thing you need to know before you buy a jewelry scale is the federal or local government requirements. Depending on the requirements of your local government, you may need to buy a jewelry scale that has been approved for retail trade use. You need a scale that is legal for trade. This means you should check with your local authority to determine what requirements you need for your scale to be approved for legal trade.
